Introduction
New Mexico became the 12th state to legalize medical cannabis in 2007. The program is overseen by the New Mexico Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis Program (MCP). To be eligible for a medical cannabis card in New Mexico, patients must be residents of the state and have a qualifying condition.
Qualifying Conditions
In order to be eligible for a medical cannabis card in New Mexico, patients must have one of the following conditions:
-Cancer
-Crohn’s disease
-Epilepsy
-Glaucoma
-HIV/AIDS
-Multiple sclerosis
-Parkinson’s disease
-Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
-Spinal cord damage with intractable spasticity
To get started, patients will need to obtain a signed certification from a registered medical cannabis provider. The provider will need to have an active, unrestricted license to practice in New Mexico. Patients will then create an account on the MCP website and submit their application along with the required documentation and fees.
Qualifying Conditions
To be eligible for a medical cannabis card in New Mexico, patients must be residents of the state with a valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license. Out-of-state residents are not eligible.

The Application Process

You will then need to submit an application to the program, along with the following:
-A $30 application fee
-A copy of your driver’s license or state ID
-A written recommendation from your healthcare provider
If you are under 18 years of age, you will also need a parent or guardian to sign your application.
Once your application is received and reviewed, you will be issued a medical cannabis card. This card will allow you to purchase and use cannabis for medicinal purposes from licensed dispensaries in New Mexico.
Renewals
If you need to renew your medical cannabis card in New Mexico, you can do so by submitting an application to the state’s Medical Cannabis Program. The application must be submitted no more than 45 days prior to the expiration date on your card, and you will need to provide proof of residency, identity, and New Mexico residency. Once your application is approved, you will be issued a new card that will be valid for two years.
Out-of-State Patients
Out-of-state patients may submit their completed application with a $25 application fee to the Department. The completed application must be postmarked within 30 days of the date on which it was notarized.
