Gather your supplies
You’ll need a few things before you get started: a vaporizer pen, a grinder, cannabis oil, and a high-quality cannabis strain. The first step is to grind your cannabis. You can do this with a regular grinder or a coffee grinder. Next, you’ll need to decarboxylate your cannabis. This process will activate the THC in your cannabis and make it easier for your body to absorb.
You will need:
-Solvent (such as ethanol/alcohol, naphtha, butane, etc.)
-Lye (sodium hydroxide) or hash oil
-Stirring rod or utensil
-Glass jar with lid
-Rice cooker or saucepan
-Metal pot . Place the cannabis in the Pyrex dish and grind it up into small pieces. Be sure to wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from the fumes.
In order to make your own cannabis oil, you’ll need to purchase a solvent. The most popular option is butane, but you could also use hexane or propane. All of these solvents are highly flammable, so it’s important that you take proper safety precautions when using them. Make sure you are working in a well-ventilated area and that you have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of an accident.
You will need a small Pyrex dish and a lid that snugly fits on top. Look for a dish that is 1in (2.5 cm) to 1.5in (3.8 cm) deep so the oil doesn’t spread out too thin. You can find these dishes at most kitchen supply stores or online retailers.
You will need a sturdy rice cooker in order to make your cannabis oil. Make sure that the rice cooker you choose has a “keep warm” function, as you will need to maintain a low temperature while the process is taking place. You should also look for a unit that has a tight-fitting lid, as this will help to prevent evaporation.
If you have access to a kitchen thermometer, this will come in handy to ensure that your final product reaches the ideal temperature. If you don’t have one, don’t sweat it – you can always eyeball it.
You’ll need cheesecloth for this project. Cheesecloth is a loose-woven cotton fabric that’s often used in cooking. It’s available in the cooking aisle of most stores, or you can find it online. You’ll need a piece that’s about 2 feet by 2 feet. Cut it into quarters so you have four pieces that are about 1 foot by 1 foot.
Prepare your workspace
Before you start, you’ll need to gather a few supplies. You’ll need medical cannabis, a grinder, a stovetop, a glass jar, a stirring implement, a cheesecloth or coffee filter, and a rubber band. You’ll also need a vaporizer pen that uses an oil cartridge. Once you have your supplies, you’re ready to get started.
Clear off your kitchen counter
Before you start making cannabis oil, clear off a large section of your kitchen counter. You’ll need a designated work space to safely make your oil. Choose an area that’s well ventilated and away from any open flames. Once you’ve selected your workspace, wipe down the counter with rubbing alcohol to disinfect it. This will help prevent the spread of bacteria and ensure that your oil is safe to use.
Place your Pyrex dish on top of the rice cooker
The first step is to find an appropriate container in which to make your cannabis oil. A good option is a small Pyrex dish, as it will be easy to pour the oil into your vape pen cartridge once it’s finished. Once you have your Pyrex dish, place it on top of the rice cooker so that it sits snugly inside.
Put the cannabis in the Pyrex dish
Scatter the ground cannabis over the surface of the Pyrex dish. You want to use as much surface area as possible to give the alcohol room to work, so don’t pack it in too tightly.
Extract the oil from the cannabis
The most popular way to use a vaporizer pen is to vape cannabis oil. Cannabis oil is a concentrated form of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in the cannabis plant, which has been extracted from the plant material. In order to make your own cannabis oil, you will need to have a quality cannabis extract and a quality vaporizer pen that is designed for use with cannabis oil.
Pour the butane into the Pyrex dish
Place the Pyrex dish on top of the cannabis. You want to make sure that the cannabis is completely submerged in the butane. If it’s not, add more until it is. It’s very important that all of the cannabis is submerged, as this will ensure that you get all of the cannabinoids and terpenes into your final product.
Butane is a highly flammable gas, so be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area, and keep a fire extinguisher close by, just in case.
Use the thermometer to monitor the temperature
You’ll need to monitor the temperature carefully while you’re heating the cannabis oil. If the temperature gets too high, it can degrade the cannabinoids and terpenes in the oil, making it less potent. Aim for a temperature between 245 and 285 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cannabinoids and terpenes have different boiling points, so you’ll want to heat the oil until all of the cannabinoids have been extracted. The boiling point for THC is 315 degrees Fahrenheit, while CBD boils at 356 degrees. You can use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of the oil as it heats.
Once all of the cannabinoids have been extracted, remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. You don’t want to handle the hot oil, so let it cool for at least five minutes before you start handling it.
Let the butane evaporate
Once the butane has finished running through the cannabis, turn off the heat and let the pot sit until all the butane has evaporated. This will take a few hours. You can speed up the process by placing the pot in another larger pot of boiling water, but make sure that the pot you are using to evaporate the butane is not plastic, as it could melt.
Collect the oil
Cannabis oil is a concentrated form of the cannabinoids in cannabis. It is typically extracted from cannabis plants that have high levels of THC. Unlike other cannabis products, cannabis oil does not need to be smoked. You can use it in your vaporizer pen to get all the benefits of cannabis without the harmful effects of smoking.
Place the cheesecloth over the Pyrex dish
Once you have all of your supplies, it’s time to make the cannabis oil. Start by preheating your oven to 245°F (118°C). While the oven is heating up, finely grind your cannabis. The finer the grind, the better the final product will be.
Next, place the cheesecloth over the Pyrex dish and pour in the ground cannabis. Make sure that all of the cannabis is covered by the cheesecloth. Then, fold the cheesecloth over so that it covers all of the cannabis and create a little package.
Place the package in the oven on the middle rack and set a timer for 120 minutes. After 120 minutes, open the oven and carefully remove the Pyrex dish. Let it cool until you can handle it without burning yourself, then proceed to step 4.
Use a rubber band to secure the cheesecloth
Use a rubber band to secure the cheesecloth over the top of the jar. Be sure that the cheesecloth is tight enough that no liquid can escape, but not so tight that it prevents air from entering.
Pour the oil into a jar
Slowly pour the cannabis oil into a small glass jar for storage. The high-proof alcohol will evaporate as it sits, so make sure you leave room at the top of the jar. You can store your cannabis oil in a cool, dark place like a cabinet for up to six months.
Store the oil
All you need is a clean, dry glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Place your cannabis material in the jar, then pour in the solvent until it’s about an inch above the plant matter. Swirl the jar a few times so the solvent can soak into the plant matter, then screw on the lid and place the jar in a dark, cool place for at least 48 hours.
Place the jar in a cool, dark place
Cannabis oil can degrade when exposed to light or heat, so make sure to store it in a cool, dark place. It will also keep longer if stored in a glass jar rather than a plastic container. If you are using cannabis oil that has already been made, you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
